I met him years ago. It wasn’t a radio thing. I was a kid. I got dragged to my mother’s “all ages” reunion at Plainedge High School. Great. A 19-year old kid who wants to chase girls and listen to Megadeth…. hanging out with my mom’s 100-year old friends (Editor’s note: they were about as old as I am now).
After pouting for a few hours, it actually turned out to be fun, and one of the reasons why was I got to shake hands with, and talk to Mahoney,.. but known to the Plainedge High School alumni as Steve Guttenberg.
For whatever reason, I never believed my mother when she said he went to her high school. I had no reason NOT to, but it just seemed weird. Actors I know having things in common with me and my PARENTS? Yes, and what made this special was that he took time to talk to everyone. He spoke to other alumni’s children about the benefits of living in town and talked to old friends just like old friends. I remember thinking “Wow that guy is cool. He’s not a millionaire actor today, he’s just Steve. I think it’s most inspiring to know that some people who have been everywhere, have been exactly where you are standing right now .
