Do you still call new stores by the name of what used to be there before it? The Sunvet Mall is still “the Rickels mall” to me. It’s still the Waldbaum’s shopping center “where Genovese used to be”, even though both stores are long gone from that shopping center on Portion Road in Ronkonkoma. Heck, I still call the three level Kohl’s in Massapequa “BUSY BEE”.
So, what will we call whatever occupies 2018 Middle Country Rd In Lake Grove? Probably most of us will still refer to it as The Good Steer. Home of the dream sauce and the best onion straws on earth. I mean, that’s what with called it for SIXTY FIVE YEARS. To not see that cow head with the halo shining bright on a Long Island summer night will be surreal.
The Good Steer is the latest staple that we on this Island said goodbye to. We saw the departure of Agnew and Taylor, Slaters Drugs, the Massapequa Mall and so many others close their doors for good, which is a sad but expected part of this journey. We are just lucky to have been around for so many family-owned, Long Island businesses that will STILL give us reasons to talk about them, long after they have said goodbye.
